Arson is defined as the unlawful and intentional damage,
or attempt to damage, any real or personal
property by fire or incendiary device. Utah's arson rate in 2005 was 5.1 per 100,000, a 50% decrease compared with 2004. Since its most recent peak in 1992, Utah's arson rate has decreased.
Utah's arson rate is less than half the national rate. (U.S. was not collecting arson data regularly until 1982. Data for 1984 and 1985 were estimated in the above figure.) |

Utah's adult arrest rate for arson was 2.6 per 100,000 of those over 18 years of age. This represents a 22.8% increase compared with 2004. |

During 2005, there were 22.1 juvenile arrests for arson per 100,000 of those aged 10 to 17. This represents a 42.9% increase from 2004.
*Juvenile arrest rates should not be compared to adult arrest rates as they are based upon a much narrower population group. |
