Total Burglary Rates
Burglary is defined as the unlawful entry into a building or other structure with the intent to commit a felony or a theft. Utah's burglary rate in 2005 was 606 per 100,000, a 4.9% decrease compared with 2004. Since its most recent peak in 1997, Utah's burglary rate had been decreasing for the most part. The rate in 2001 was the lowest it had been since 1965, with the 2005 rate showing another decrease.

Over the past 40 years, Utah's burglary rate has consistently been lower than the national rate. In the mid-1990s, Utah's rate was nearly equal to the national rate. Recent trends show the Utah rate and the national rate beginning to converge again.
Adult Burglary Arrests
Utah's adult arrest rate for burglary was 57.1 per 100,000 of those over 18 years of age.  This represents a 12.1% increase from 2004.
Juvenile Burglary Arrests
During 2005, there were 107.3 juvenile arrests for burglary per 100,000 of those aged 10 to 17.  This represents a 14.8% increase compared with 2004.
*Juvenile arrest rates should not be compared to adult arrest rates as they are based upon a much narrower population group.
