Rape is defined as the carnal knowledge of a person,
forcibly and/or against that person's
will; or not forcibly or against the
person's will where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her
temporary or permanent mental or
physical incapacity. Utah's rape rate in 2005 was 37.3 per 100,000, reflecting a 4.6% decrease over 2004. Most experts believe the major increase in Utah's rape rate between 1988 and 1991 was largely due to an increase in reporting not offending.
Utah's rape rate continues to be higher than the national rape rate. |

Utah's adult arrest rate for rape was 7.7 per 100,000 of those over 18 years of age. This represents a 33.7% increase compared with 2004. |

During 2005, there were 19.7 juvenile arrests for rape per 100,000 of those aged 10 to 17. This represents a 105% increase compared with 2004.
*Juvenile arrest rates should not be compared to adult arrest rates as they are based upon a much narrower population group. |
