Total Index Crime
Index crimes include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Utah's total index crime rate in 2005 was 4,096, a 5.2% decrease over the 2004 rate of 4,322. Since its peak in 1995, Utah's total index crime rate has largely been decreasing. Utah's rates are some of the lowest total index crime rates since 1972.
Utah's total index crime rate parallels the national rate. In 2005, Utah's rate still was marginally higher than the national rate. This is generally driven by Utah's higher than average larceny rate.
Total Adult Arrests
Utah's adult arrest rate for index crimes was 673 per 100,000 of those over 18 years of age.  This represents an 11.1% increase over 2004.
Total Juvenile Arrests
Utah's juvenile arrest rate for index crimes increased in 2005.  During 2005, there were 1,760 juvenile arrests for index crimes per 100,000 of those aged 10 to 17.  This represents a 10.7% increase compared with 2004.
*Juvenile arrest rates should not be compared to adult arrest rates as they are based upon a much narrower population group.
